This portrait revolves around the theme of connection; in particular, my mother’s connection with nature, and my connection with my mother. My mother is standing on a boardwalk that symbolizes life, the high and lows of life represented through the shadows and highlights. There are two shadows cast on the boardwalk, one is my mother's and the other is mine, representing my mother’s significance in my life. Furthermore, the background has many natural elements that hold symbolic meaning. Water symbolizes purity and sustenance, while trees represent physical and spiritual nourishment and longevity; these are aspects one seeks from nature.
"Sometimes, we need to disconnect in order to reconnect with what matters most."

This artwork was chosen for the digital gallery of ROM’s #MyPandemicStory exhibition. The piece represents how my connection with my mother and nature has reinforced during the pandemic. Natural elements, such as water and trees, represent the tranquillity and refuge one seeks from nature and how my family has resorted to the outdoors to find respite from the challenges we face from the COVID-19 pandemic.
